Find Bitter Herb and keep it for recipes
Bitter Herb is an all-season forage ingredient found around Town, the Town Outskirts, the Mall, and the Old Woods. The Garbage Shop can also sell it for 8g, with stock that changes nightly. Its sale value is 4g, and eating one directly restores only 2 HP.
The important use is as an ingredient. It appears in soups, sandwiches, mana recovery food, wet herb bundles, meat preparations, the Prep Table, Bark Armor, and a rain offering. The amounts vary considerably: Pizza needs one, Bitter Gel needs five, and Lesser Offering of Rain needs twelve.
Keep one Bitter Herb for Purple Room painting 1 at the Art Gallery if that collection is unfinished. Then decide which recipe you actually intend to make before consuming the remainder. A small stack can disappear quickly when construction and food preparation share the same ingredient.
Foraging areas and available alternatives
The broad forage regions are Town, Town Outskirts, Mall, and the Old Woods, and Bitter Herb is listed for all seasons. More specific gathering areas include Town, Lakefront, Mall Parking Lot, the western Town Outskirts, Pumpkin Path, and Greystone Estates.
Those area names identify places to look, rather than a single guaranteed plant coordinate. The useful route is to check the forage you encounter while travelling through an accessible region, keeping the named herb rather than substituting another plant with a similar appearance.
| Acquisition option | Relevant condition |
|---|---|
| Foraging | Available across all seasons in the listed regions |
| Garbage Shop | 8g when present; stock changes nightly |
| Garbage cans | Possible incidental find; not a guaranteed result |
| Encounter and supply loot | Included in applicable early-farm and supply reward tables |
| Attached to the “Note to Self:” letter from Self |
For garbage-can searches, the item entry specifically lists Mall BF, Mall F1, Town (North), and Sewers F1 (North), among other locations. A successful Bitter Herb result is listed as one to three copies.
If the Garbage Shop does not carry it on a particular visit, check again after the nightly stock change. Absence from one shop inventory does not establish a seasonal ban on gathering the herb.
Loot and garbage cans are alternatives, but they do not provide a guaranteed quantity from every search or fight. Use them as extra supplies while pursuing another objective rather than planning a fixed recipe around an unconfirmed drop.
For an Old Woods trip, the Old Woods walkthrough covers the wider area. Bitter Herb gathering itself does not require you to complete every encounter in that region before using plants found elsewhere.
Raw healing, buying, and selling
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Use one raw Bitter Herb | Restore 2 HP |
| Buy one from the Garbage Shop | Pay 8g |
| Sell one | Receive 4g |
Raw eating provides a small immediate heal. That is a different decision from using a herb as one ingredient in a larger recipe. For example, two herbs and two Red Mushrooms produce Vegetable Soup, which restores twenty HP. You also need access to the relevant station and the other ingredients.
Buying a missing herb can complete a recipe, but the shop purchase price is twice its individual sale value. Reserve the quantities you need before selling an entire stack and then trying to repurchase ingredients for a planned meal.
The following recipe tables describe ingredients for one craft. Where a crop or fish accepts any quality, a higher-quality copy is not required merely to make the listed food. Saving a valuable quality tier for a separate collection can therefore be sensible when a lower-quality ingredient is available.
Cooking Pot recipes available from the start
These five recipes are listed as known from the start. That describes recipe access; you still need to use the Cooking Pot and supply every ingredient.
| Food | Ingredients for one craft | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetable Soup | Red Mushroom 2; Bitter Herb 2 | 20 HP |
| Bitter Gel | Bitter Herb 5 | 10 MP |
| Pizza | Bread 1; Cooked Meat 1; Red Mushroom 1; Bitter Herb 1; Secret Sauce 1 | 50 HP |
| Simple Kebab | Entrails 1; Bitter Herb 1; Mystery Meat 5 | 40 HP |
| Light Sandwich | Radish 1 (any quality); Mystery Meat 1; Red Mushroom 1; Bitter Herb 1 | 45 HP and 15 MP |
Bitter Gel is the direct herb-only mana option: five Bitter Herb produce the item that restores ten MP. The other recipes draw on different supplies, so comparing only their herb counts misses the cost of Bread, meat, sauce, or crops.
Pizza and Light Sandwich each use a single herb, but their remaining ingredients are different. Choose a meal around what you have and what you need to restore, rather than assuming that recipes using the same number of herbs are interchangeable.
Slime Tonic is also known from the start, but it uses the Juicer and is listed in its own section below.
Learn the remaining Cooking Pot recipes
Most of the additional foods require using their named recipe item. Ghost Flounder Soup is taught by Fisherman Herb after the first stage of Casting Your Line. Knowing the ingredient list does not independently unlock a recipe that requires that step.
| Food | Ingredients for one craft | Recipe access | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost Flounder Soup | Ghost Flounder 2 (any quality); Bitter Herb 2 | Herb, Casting Your Line stage 1 | 30 HP |
| Pumpkin Muffin | Bread 1; Pumpkin 1 (any quality); Red Mushroom 2; Bitter Herb 2 | Recipe: Pumpkin Muffin | 50 HP and 15 MP |
| Harvest Stew | Corn 2 (any quality); Pumpkin 1 (any quality); Red Mushroom 2; Bitter Herb 2; Cooked Meat 2; Ghost Flounder 1 (any quality) | Recipe: Harvest Stew | 100 HP and 10 MP |
| Mana Muffin | Cornbread 1; Salt 1; Bitter Herb 2 | Recipe: Mana Muffin | 30 MP |
| Special Donut | Pumpkin 2 (any quality); Red Mushroom 4; Bitter Herb 4; Bread 2; Worm 4 | Recipe: Special Donut | 32 HP; Zealotry for four battle turns |
| Blood Sandwich | Bloodberries 1; Bread 1; Bitter Herb 2; Red Mushroom 2 | Recipe: Blood Sandwich | 25 HP and 25 MP |
| Bean Stew | Bean 2 (any quality); Bitter Herb 2; Red Mushroom 2 | Recipe: Bean Stew | 50 HP |
| Razorfish Soup | Razorfish 2 (any quality); Bitter Herb 1; Red Mushroom 1 | Recipe: Razorfish Soup | 40 HP |
| Mana Candy | Honey 1; Bitter Herb 2; Salt 3 | Recipe: Mana Candy; Artisanal Goods reward | 30 MP |
Use the Mana Muffin guide for that recipe's access and Cornbread chain. The Mana Candy guide covers its recipe reward. Both use two herbs and restore thirty MP, but one needs Cornbread and one Salt, while the other needs Honey and three Salt.
Ghost Flounder Soup and Harvest Stew compete for the same fish. If your current plan requires a Gallery stew, count that fish before turning the whole catch into soup. The Ghost Flounder guide helps with the ingredient rather than replacing the recipe-learning requirement.
Special Donut is distinct because its description includes Zealotry for four battle turns. That effect does not mean every Bitter Herb meal grants Zealotry. The recovery columns above apply to their named food only.
Sushi is not an established normal-play unlock
The listed Sushi ingredients are 1 Stalktopus, 2 Ghost Flounder, 4 Bitter Herb, and 1 Secret Sauce. Both fish accept any quality. However, its recipe is not currently established as learnable through normal play.
Treat the ingredient record as a limitation, not as an instruction to pursue an invented teacher or hidden task. If Sushi is absent from your Cooking Pot, collecting those ingredients alone does not demonstrate that you missed a confirmed unlock route.
Use the Juicer for Slime Tonic
Slime Tonic requires 2 Viscera, 2 Mysterious Ooze, and 5 Bitter Herb at the Juicer. Its recipe is known from the start, and the resulting tonic restores 40 HP and 20 MP.
This is a useful station distinction. Although the herb appears in many Cooking Pot recipes, Slime Tonic belongs to the Juicer. Searching only the Cooking Pot menu will not find the correct production tab.
Five herbs is also the cost of Bitter Gel, but the two outputs and other requirements differ. Slime Tonic needs monster materials and restores both resources; Bitter Gel uses only herbs and restores ten MP. Select the complete recipe you can support.
Prepare bundles and spiced meat at the Prep Table
The Prep Table makes four Bitter Herb inputs for the Drying Rack. These preparations are unfinished products. Wet bundles must be dried, and raw meat preparations must be processed, before they become their final named outputs.
| Preparation | Ingredients for one craft |
|---|---|
| Basic Herb Bundle (Wet) | Bitter Herb 5; Red Mushroom 5 |
| Potent Herb Bundle (Wet) | Common Mushroom 5; Bitter Herb 5; Red Mushroom 5; Green Mushroom 5 |
| Spiced Jerky (Raw) | Mystery Meat 3; Salt 1; Bitter Herb 2; Red Mushroom 2 |
| Spiced Sausage (Raw) | Mystery Meat 5; Mystery Steak 1; Salt 2; Bitter Herb 2; Common Mushroom 2; Red Mushroom 2; Green Mushroom 2 |
All four Prep Table preparations are known from the start.
Making one of each consumes 14 Bitter Herb. It also uses 14 Red Mushroom, plus the meat, Salt, Common Mushroom, and Green Mushroom shown in the table. The Cured Spiced Steak preparation used by the same Gallery painting does not add Bitter Herb to this subtotal.
A Basic Herb Bundle and a Potent Herb Bundle are different outputs. The additional mushrooms in the potent version are part of its recipe, not a quality upgrade that occurs automatically while a basic bundle dries.
The rack finishes these preparations in ten days normally or seven days in the Farmhouse Basement. Plan the drying step before treating a newly crafted wet bundle as a completed Gallery donation.
Construction, armor, soup, and offerings
Four further recipes use this ingredient at different stations. These are substantial enough to reserve their herb costs before using the rest for food.
| Result | Station | Full ingredient requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Prep Table | Workbench | Stone 10; Wood 20; Bitter Herb 5; Red Mushroom 5; String 1 |
| Bark Armor | Anvil | Wood 4; Bitter Herb 5 |
| Serpent Soup | Oven | Serpent Steak 1; Bonefish 2 (any quality); Bitter Herb 10; Red Mushroom 10; Radish 1 (any quality); Bones 5 |
| Lesser Offering of Rain | Witching Mortar | Red Mushroom 6; Bitter Herb 12; Coal 6; Worm 5; Eyeball 2 (any quality); Bones 8 |
All four are listed as known from the start, with Bark Armor marked as a once-crafted item. That does not make the Anvil, Oven, or Witching Mortar the same station as the Cooking Pot.
The rain offering uses the largest Bitter Herb amount in this list. Its name does not establish that it guarantees a Rainman encounter or directly produces Spectral Rain. Those are separate item and encounter questions.
The Prep Table consumes five herbs simply to create the station. For a newly built table plus one of each of the four drying preparations, reserve 19 Bitter Herb. If Purple Room painting 1 is still unfinished, keep another one separately, bringing that particular plan to 20.
Gallery and gift decisions

Purple Room painting 1 asks for one Bitter Herb. It is one of six different gatherables in that painting, so additional copies of this herb do not substitute for the other five items.
Bitter Herb is disliked by Alice, Blorph, Edwin, Ellie, Josh, Molly, Sam, and Tanner. Celeste hates it. It is therefore a poor default friendship gift for those characters, despite being a common item you might have in surplus.
Use the gift guide when choosing a present. Save the herb for a confirmed recipe or donation when the intended recipient has one of those negative preferences.
Check the station and the reserved amount
When a recipe is missing, first match its station: Cooking Pot, Juicer, Prep Table, Anvil, Oven, Witching Mortar, or Workbench. Then distinguish a recipe known from the start from one that requires a recipe item or Herb's task lesson.
When you are short on ingredients, use the recipe's exact amount. Buying one herb completes Pizza's herb requirement, while Bitter Gel still needs five and Lesser Offering of Rain still needs twelve. Nightly shop restocking and all-season forage provide ways to search for the shortage without assuming a guaranteed single-container drop.
