To complete Build-A-Wife in Welcome to Elderfield, speak to Old Man Jackson in his Town house, then add Branches, Small Stones, Mud Blob, Metal Chunks, and Toy Heart to the coat rack in the other room, in that order. After adding the heart, speak to Jackson again to learn Dark Blast, a ritual spell.

The materials are tied to task progress. Start Jackson's task before searching for Branches, and advance the coat rack between pickups. Collecting ordinary Stone or metal crafting supplies is not a substitute for the named task items.

This is a task about building a companion for Jackson. For your own relationship progression, use the separate romance guide.

Start the Task in Jackson's House

Welcome to Elderfield coat rack in Old Man Jackson’s house during the Build-A-Wife task
The coat rack is the assembly point. This scene shows an intermediate stage of the task.

Visit Old Man Jackson's House in Town and speak to him. He asks for help building someone and points you toward the coat rack in the other room.

Go into that room and examine the coat rack. The structure gives the next material clue. This interaction is your guide to the sequence; treat each new request as the next step rather than trying to hand everything to Jackson in one conversation.

Use the Town map guide for broader navigation when you are locating homes and area entrances. Once inside Jackson's house, this task revolves around two interactions: the coat rack for assembly and Jackson for the start and final reward.

Follow the Five-Material Order

StepExact task itemSearch areaProgress condition
1BranchesTown parkBuild-A-Wife active
2Small StonesLakefront stonesBranches step completed
3Mud BlobSewers F1 mudSmall Stones step completed
4Metal ChunksMall F1Mud Blob step completed
5Toy HeartVending MachineAdd after Metal Chunks

Return to the coat rack after obtaining each requested part. Use the part on the structure, then read the updated clue before heading out for the next one.

The exact names matter. Small Stones is a zero-weight task key item, rather than a stack of ordinary Stone. Mud Blob and Metal Chunks are also task items. Treat the item text in your inventory and the coat rack's current request as the confirmation that you have the correct piece.

Add Branches From the Town Park

With the task active, search the park in Town for Branches. Jackson's first clue points to the park, and the Branches pickup is available while his task is active.

  1. Speak to Jackson to accept the task.
  2. Examine the coat rack to see the Branches request.
  3. Go to the park and collect the task's Branches.
  4. Return to Jackson's house.
  5. Use Branches on the coat rack.
  6. Examine the structure again for the next request.

If you looked around before accepting the task, return after starting it. The pickup has an active-task condition, so an earlier visit without finding it does not mean you need to gather Wood or craft a bundle yourself.

Branches are consumed when added to the structure. After the hand-in, move on to Small Stones rather than searching for a second bundle.

Add Small Stones From Lakefront

After Branches are installed, the coat rack needs Small Stones for thickness. Go to Lakefront and search the Stones interaction for the task item.

The Small Stones pickup requires the task to be active and its first assembly step to be reached. If you visit Lakefront too early, finish the Branches hand-in before checking again.

Bring Small Stones back and use them on the coat rack. The next clue asks for mud from the sewers. This update tells you that the second material has counted; carrying the stones without installing them does not advance to the mud stage.

Small Stones cannot be sold and weighs zero. You do not need to choose between selling this task item and keeping it for Jackson: its purpose is the structure in his house.

Add Mud Blob From Sewers F1

The third piece is Mud Blob, found through the Mud interaction in Sewers F1. This pickup is tied to reaching the second assembly step, so complete the Small Stones hand-in first.

Collect the named Mud Blob, return to Jackson's house, and add it to the coat rack. Then examine the structure for the Metal Chunks request.

The useful distinction is between being in the correct area and being at the correct task stage. If you find mud in the sewers but cannot collect the part, check that the coat rack has already accepted Small Stones. Travelling to the right floor cannot replace the prior hand-in.

Mud Blob is another zero-weight, unsellable task item, and it is consumed during assembly.

Add Metal Chunks From Mall F1

After the mud stage, the coat rack asks for Metal Chunks for detail. Search Mall F1 for this task pickup, then bring it back to the structure.

This part requires the task to have reached the third assembly step. Complete the Mud Blob hand-in before making the Mall your next target.

Use the exact Metal Chunks task item. The request is not an instruction to produce generic bars at a Forge. The separate Forge upgrade guide covers that crafting system; it does not replace Jackson's named pickup.

Once Metal Chunks are installed, examine the coat rack again. Its final request is a heart that money can buy.

Buy and Install the Toy Heart

Buy Toy Heart from the Vending Machine. It is a cheap plastic heart sold as a task item, and the machine's listed stock is 1.

Check the item name before purchasing. You need Toy Heart, not another heart-like object or combat material. Take it back to Jackson's house and use it on the coat rack after the Metal Chunks stage.

Toy Heart cannot be sold and is consumed when used in the house. Once it has been added, the five-part assembly is complete. Your next action is to speak to Jackson, rather than continuing to search the map for another construction piece.

Speak to Jackson for Dark Blast

After the final hand-in, return to Jackson and finish the conversation. He acknowledges the completed wife and teaches Dark Blast, a ritual spell.

Do not stop at installing the last part. The coat rack handles the construction, but the reward comes from the follow-up conversation with Jackson. If you have the finished structure and are waiting for the task reward, speak to him again.

For using spells alongside equipment and recovery items, continue with the combat guide. This walkthrough ends at the confirmed task reward rather than turning into a full spell build guide.

Fix a Missing Pickup or Unfinished Step

Use the next requested part to diagnose where the task stopped:

  • No Branches pickup: start Jackson's task, then inspect the coat rack and revisit the Town park.
  • No Small Stones: install Branches before checking Lakefront's Stones interaction.
  • No Mud Blob: install Small Stones before checking Mud in Sewers F1.
  • No Metal Chunks: install Mud Blob before searching Mall F1 for the task item.
  • Still missing the heart: buy the named Toy Heart from the Vending Machine, then add it after Metal Chunks.
  • All parts added but no reward: speak to Jackson again.

The repeated return trips are part of the assembly sequence. When a material seems unavailable, check the most recent coat-rack hand-in before repeating a long search in the next area.
