To make Leather in Welcome to Elderfield, craft Scraped Hide at a Witching Mortar, then process that hide in a Furnace. One hide needs 1 fuel and 2 in-game hours for the Furnace conversion. The hide recipe uses 1 Bloody Skin, 2 Crushed Bones, and 2 Salt.

Bloody Skin is the starting material, not the finished Furnace input. If you have skin but cannot produce Leather, check the intermediate step before spending time fighting for more supplies. Bookmaster loot and a gift letter from Edwin are other recorded sources, but neither is a dependable replacement for a production chain you already have working.

The two stations perform different jobs. The Witching Mortar crafts the intermediate material; the Furnace processes it over time. Looking for finished Leather in the Mortar menu, or putting unprepared Bloody Skin into the Furnace, skips part of the chain.

Before returning to your crafting area, count the exact items you have. Ordinary Bones are not Crushed Bones, and Bloody Skin is not Scraped Hide. A useful preparation habit is to finish the bone and salt requirements first, then turn the skin into hide only when the whole recipe is available.

For several pieces, multiply the hide ingredients by your intended number of conversions. Three hide preparations require 3 Bloody Skin, 6 Crushed Bones, and 6 Salt. That arithmetic describes the material budget; it does not establish that the Furnace can hold three inputs at once or that all three finish in two hours.

Get Bloody Skin before preparing the hide

The Meat Man sells Bloody Skin for 30g, with unlimited stock in the recorded shop list. Farm gathering nodes are another listed source. If you already have the other hide ingredients and need a predictable purchase, check the Meat Man’s stock rather than relying on a bonus loot roll.

Buying one Bloody Skin and the two required Salt costs 110g before bones, equipment, or fuel. Finished Leather’s listed sell value is 60g, so this purchase route is for obtaining a needed crafting material, not a profitable buy-process-sell loop. Materials you already own change your spending needs; they do not change the conversion steps.

Bloody Skin also has other crafting uses, including Thick Hide at a Prep Table. For this Leather chain, choose Scraped Hide at the Witching Mortar. Preparing a different hide at a different station does not establish that it will work as the Furnace input listed here.

Prepare Crushed Bones and Salt

Crushed Bones can be crafted from Bones at a Witching Mortar. The recorded recipe uses 1 Bones. The Grinder also lists a Bones-to-Crushed-Bones conversion taking 1 in-game hour and 1 fuel. Choose the route supported by the equipment you have available; the Mortar route avoids adding a separate machine wait to your preparation plan.

Salt is sold at the General Store for 40g, with unlimited stock in the recorded shop list. If purchasing the two Salt needed for one hide, budget 80g for that ingredient alone. This is not a total Leather production cost: it excludes your skin, bones, equipment, and fuel.

If you already have Salt Rock and a Grinder, processing it produces 2 Salt in 2 in-game hours, using 1 fuel. Those two Salt match one Scraped Hide recipe. The Windmill also has a Salt Rock conversion, listed at six in-game hours; its fuel field is not specified, so do not plan around an assumed free conversion.

Salt is shared with cooking. Reserve the amount for your hide before making meals, especially if you have only a small supply. Conversely, do not turn every available ingredient into Leather if your immediate obstacle is running out of food during exploration. A small batch lets you finish the next equipment requirement without committing your entire stock.

Make Scraped Hide at the Witching Mortar

Scraped Hide is already associated with the Witching Mortar rather than a separately purchased cooking recipe. Bring the full ingredient set, interact with the correct station, and select the hide preparation. Confirm that you receive Scraped Hide before moving to the Furnace.

The recorded Witching Mortar construction uses 15 Stone and 5 Wood, and becomes available with the Workbench. Owning the ingredients for a Mortar does not mean you already have a usable one placed. If you have not set up the station yet, resolve that first; a trip to the Furnace cannot replace it.

If the hide is unavailable, work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that the station is the Witching Mortar.
  2. Check for Bloody Skin rather than a similarly named meat or material.
  3. Check that the two bone ingredients are already Crushed Bones.
  4. Count two Salt for the current preparation.
  5. Read the selected recipe’s requirements in your own build before confirming.

These checks separate a missing ingredient from a wrong station. They also prevent a longer detour for more skin when the actual shortage is Salt or processed bones.

Process Scraped Hide in the Furnace

Use Scraped Hide as the Furnace input, supply fuel, and allow two in-game hours for the conversion. Real-world minutes spent outside the game are not the listed processing measure. After the required game time has passed, return and collect the product.

If you have already made hide but still lack Leather, inspect the machine stage: the hide must have been loaded, fuel must be available, and the required processing time must have elapsed. Collecting a completed product is distinct from simply leaving ingredients in your inventory.

For equipment planning, check the remaining Leather requirement before starting another batch. The Forge upgrade guide covers the equipment side of the process. This page covers making the ingredient; it does not replace the individual tool or upgrade recipe shown at your crafting station.

The Grinder is also useful for other production chains. If you are using it for Bones or Salt Rock while preparing Leather, avoid forgetting a food job you had planned there. The Dough guide covers its Wheat conversion, so you can decide which output you need first.

Other Leather sources and uses

Welcome to Elderfield workshop showing the Forge and Upgrade equipment menu
Equipment crafting is a later use of Leather. This overview is not the Furnace’s processing menu.

Bookmaster variants are recorded as sources of 1–2 Leather. Treat this as possible loot, not a guaranteed reward for defeating every Bookmaster. The listed drop percentages are conditional on the battle’s loot roll, so they do not mean that half of all fights necessarily give Leather.

Edwin’s letter A small gift can include Leather. Check mail you have already received, but do not build a production plan around a guaranteed date or friendship threshold: neither is established here. The Edwin guide handles his separate character and task information.

Leather is consumed by crafting and is also recorded as an input at a Metal Door in the Mall Mines. Keep the door’s current prompt in mind before spending your final piece on equipment. This is a reason to reserve material for a specific next action, not evidence that every mine door uses the same amount or that Leather opens all routes.

When the immediate goal is one upgrade or one interaction, make enough for that goal, collect it, and verify the next prompt. Expanding production becomes useful when you have another confirmed requirement. The dependable path remains the same: prepare the hide, fuel the Furnace, wait in game, and collect Leather.
