The Catacombs entrance is in the Church Cemetery. To obtain the entrance key, follow Adrian's Tree Branch Cleanup chain: accept his letter task, defeat the Ancient Tree in the western Old Woods, and return to Adrian for the reward. Completing the jogging club tasks does not automatically place the Catacombs Key in your inventory.

Once inside, the Catacombs have additional barriers, a separate mine gate, and a later route into the Deep Catacombs. Those are distinct from opening the cemetery entrance. Use the section for your actual obstacle so that a later key or research item does not become an unnecessary prerequisite for your first visit.

Complete Adrian's task before searching the cemetery

The usual route begins with Adrian's earlier Tentacle Cleanup progression. Finish that task and return to claim its result, then watch for his follow-up letter. Open the letter through the journal at home and speak with Adrian about the next job. Tree Branch Cleanup is the task that connects the western Old Woods encounter to the Catacombs Key.

This chain contains several actions that can be easy to blur together: receiving a letter, opening it, accepting the task, defeating its target, and reporting back. A letter sitting unread does not show that you have completed the conversation that activates the assignment. Likewise, a defeated target does not prove you claimed the reward. When the key is missing, inspect those task steps before searching for a different cemetery entrance.

A useful first check is the current journal wording. If it still asks you to speak with Adrian, go to him rather than repeating the forest encounter. If it asks you to deal with the Ancient Tree, that is the action still associated with the task. If you have completed the encounter, return to Adrian and check the resulting inventory and journal state.

Reach the Ancient Tree in the western Old Woods

The Local Joggers Club opens routes needed for further exploration of the Old Woods. Its chain involves Michelle at the Campsite, Barry, the Mill Key, the Lost Mirror in the Abandoned Mill, and a Verdite Ore delivery. Those tasks explain how to reach more of the forest. Their completion is not itself the same reward as Adrian's Catacombs Key.

For the full path through membership, use the Old Woods access guide. It distinguishes the initial Sturdy Axe requirement from the Mill and club route, then separates those from the later Deep Woods. That distinction is useful here because the Ancient Tree is associated with the western forest route. You should not assume you need Dayton's Eternal Lantern merely because someone describes the location as being deep in the woods.

Once Tree Branch Cleanup is active and you can reach the target, defeat the Ancient Tree and report back to Adrian. Keep the return conversation in your route plan. It is the step that often separates a player who has done the forest exploration from a player who actually has the entrance key. After claiming the reward, go to the Church Cemetery to use the Catacombs entrance.

Use the entrance key at the Church Cemetery

The cemetery is the physical entrance location for the Catacombs. If you have been searching the Sewers or looking for a random opening inside the Old Woods, return to the church grounds after obtaining Adrian's reward. The forest task supplies access; it is not itself the doorway into the Catacombs. These are two locations in one progression chain.

Read the key name and the entrance interaction. A Basic Skeleton Key belongs to a different consumable-lock system, and a key for the Catacombs Mines belongs to an internal route. Neither should be assumed to substitute for the entrance reward. The Skeleton Key guide lists known uses and explains why a generic-looking lock does not make all keys interchangeable.

The first entrance does not require you to have already collected internal Catacombs materials. Living Bones, a Small Hammer, the mine gate key, and a Climbing Rope relate to later obstacles. Adding them all to a first-entry checklist creates a circular route, because several are obtained through activities inside the region. Enter with the cemetery key, then resolve each internal barrier as you reach it.

Distinguish the Catacombs access items

ObstacleRelevant task or item
Church Cemetery entranceCatacombs Key from Adrian's Tree Branch Cleanup progression.
Hardened Bones passageCarlos’s Feed the Mold task: ten Living Bones, then the Gravemoss Colony fight.
Sealed Chamber off the second floorSmall Hammer.
Catacombs Mines gateAdam's The Strange Orb task and its specific mine gate key.
Deep Catacombs descentDayton's research, a Climbing Rope, and the Sophia encounter.

The table describes different layers of exploration, not a list to complete before the cemetery door will open. If you have already entered the Catacombs, the original key has done its job. Read the obstacle you are facing now. Searching for another entrance key will not address a hammer barrier or an unfinished research objective.

Open the Hardened Bones passage

Welcome to Elderfield Catacombs passage with skull-lined walls and a barred gate

Carlos's Feed the Mold task is associated with the Catacombs second floor. It asks for ten Living Bones, which you obtain by defeating skeletons. You can accept the task before you have all ten. That lets you establish the objective first and collect the material as you explore instead of returning only after guessing the required amount.

Bring the bones back to Carlos, then complete the fight against the Gravemoss Colony. The reward for this task provides passage through the Hardened Bones; delivering the stack is not the final action. Prepare for the encounter before the return conversation, and check the task again afterward if the route is still blocked.

Keep the item name specific when gathering materials. The task asks for Living Bones, not any object whose name contains bone or any ore from the nearby mines. Inventory planning is helpful here because other tasks and crafting can also compete for materials. Reserve the amount needed for your active delivery if opening this passage is your immediate goal.

Find a Small Hammer for the Sealed Chamber

The Sealed Chamber off the second floor uses a Small Hammer. This is an internal exploration obstacle, not a reason to revisit Adrian for another cemetery key. The Small Hammer is consumed when used, so plan the interaction around the particular barrier you intend to open. Carrying a different tool with hammer in its name should not be assumed to satisfy that requirement.

Bill’s Secrets of the Catacombs task on the second floor provides a route to Small Hammers. It asks you to investigate three Mysteries and return, then investigate six and return. The turn-ins matter because the reward comes through the task sequence. Do not treat the first investigation count as the entire chain if the journal has moved to the next objective.

This also gives exploration a practical purpose beyond finding the main route. A Mystery investigation can help advance the task that supplies the item for another chamber. Follow the count and return instruction of the active objective rather than turning an optional internal task into a universal entrance requirement.

Jess’s Skeletal Survey offers another Small Hammer route on the second floor. An older route places wire cutters for purchase near the end of Catacombs 2F. Use them to cut the wires in the bottom-left part of that floor, retrieve Jess’s Lost Notes, and return the notes to her for the reward. No specific vendor name or purchase price is established for the cutters, so check the available interaction in that area.

Unlock the Catacombs Mines through Adam

The mine gate has its own task chain, The Strange Orb, from Adam in the Forsaken Settlement. Adam gives you an orb and sends you toward the darkest part of the Old Woods. Break or use the orb as the task instructs to draw out the creature, then bring its skull back to Adam. The reward is the key for the Catacombs Mine gate.

This route leaves the Catacombs for a forest objective, which can make the missing mine key seem disconnected from the gate. Use the task name to keep the connection clear. The item you return is the skull associated with Adam's request, not a general invitation to collect any boss skull. An older route identifies the destination as the Bus Stop in Old Woods 2 and the encounter as The Beast. Interact with the orb there to start the fight, following your current task if its location wording differs. This route has not been verified on a current save, so use the area label and landmark rather than an assumed screen coordinate.

Once you have the mine gate key, return to the internal gate.

Inside the mining progression, Gibson's Skeletal Depths task asks you to reach the second mine floor and return. Accept it before making that descent if you want the trip to count toward the task's sequence. Its reward is a Large Hammer.

Prepare for the Deep Catacombs research chain

The Deep Catacombs require later progress with Prof. Dayton. The broader chain is described as Deeper Research, while some versions distinguish the Catacombs part as Deep Research. Follow the objectives and rewards in your journal when the wording differs. The important separation is between this research and Adrian's initial entrance key.

The documented research route begins after Bone Cleanup, with Adrian's Mall Elevator Key reward. Investigate the untranslated console in the Mall basement, then speak with Dayton for the translation guide. Return to the basement for the Essence of Daeus and bring it to him. Dayton then provides the Eternal Lantern for the later Old Woods route.

Use the lantern progression to reach the deepest Old Woods and find the Essence of Delvek. Return to Dayton with that essence to continue the research. The chain provides the Climbing Rope relevant to descending into the Deep Catacombs. It is not a rope found by repeatedly opening ordinary locked closets.

You do not need to finish the Stone Tower before doing this research. Both chains involve Dayton, but their objectives are separate. The Stone Tower guide covers its farm seal and crop offerings if that is also in your journal. An unfinished tower does not by itself explain why your current research objective is still asking about the Mall basement or an essence.

Complete the Sophia encounter before descending

The documented deep descent requires both the Climbing Rope and the defeat of Sophia. The rope alone is therefore not the entire access condition. Sophia belongs to Hans's Meet Sophia task, which has its own progression through the Catacombs. Work through that task if you have the research item but still cannot continue down.

Meet Sophia follows Hans's earlier progression and Catacombs access. After the relevant bug-catching and Catacombs requirements, the recorded chain includes a three-day wait for a letter; pending letters can delay its arrival. Open the letter through the home journal and speak to Hans. This timing belongs to that specific task, not to every letter or every Catacombs gate.

The task sends you to Charlie on the third floor. Continue the objective involving a doll placed at the third-floor pit, then deal with Sophia. Returning to Hans completes his side of the task and leads to coffee bean seeds. However, the recorded descent condition does not require that return to Hans before you go down once Sophia is defeated and the rope requirement is satisfied.

The research objective beyond the descent is the Essence of Kaal. Find it in the Deep Catacombs, then return to Dayton to advance the research task. This gives the descent a specific destination; reaching the lower area alone does not complete the professor’s request.

The Hans progression guide provides the larger farm-task context for this encounter. Keeping the two outcomes separate helps: Sophia's defeat matters for the deeper route, while Hans's turn-in matters for his task and reward. Do both when practical, but do not invent an extra descent condition by merging the two.

Keep internal tasks separate from entry requirements

Other Catacombs tasks can be useful while you explore. Tobias’s Lost Supplies asks for three supplies. They provide reasons to inspect the area and return to its residents.

Fishing equipment is another separate system. Catacombs pools are associated with the Quality Rod and Firefly bait, but a fishing requirement does not determine which key opens the region. If you can stand beside a pool but cannot use the fishing interaction, address the rod and bait rather than restarting Adrian's task. The fishing equipment guide helps identify that kind of mismatch.

For a missing first key, return to Adrian's letter, accepted task, Ancient Tree objective, and reward conversation. For an internal barrier, identify whether it asks for bones, a hammer, Adam's mine key, or the research and Sophia conditions. The Catacombs become easier to navigate when each obstruction has its own next action instead of being treated as one unfinished unlock.
