Welcome to Elderfield normally allows two gifts per character per week. Use the Social menu as the authority for reactions in the current save: give a low-cost test item, read the response, and confirm that the item is recorded before spending a rare loved gift. Preference lists changed during development, and player reports show that some once-recommended favorites now produce neutral or hated reactions.
If the goal is marriage, keep one gift opportunity available for the Ring of Binding. The proposal uses the gift interaction, and reaching ten hearts does not override a full weekly allowance.
Welcome to Elderfield gift planning rules
| Rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Two gifts per person per week | Plan tests and high-value gifts instead of spending both immediately |
| Social menu records reactions | Current save evidence outranks an old online table |
| First neutral, liked, or loved discoveries can give extra friendship | Testing different safe items can be more useful than repeating one gift |
| Love Potion is listed as a universal loved gift in captured data | It is a rare resource; verify the current response before relying on it |
| Failed Meal and event “Eggs” are recorded as disliked universal gifts | Keep them out of a friendship route unless testing deliberately |
| Ring of Binding uses the gift action | Reserve a weekly slot before proposing |
This guide provides test candidates, not an unchangeable database. A candidate appears in the captured character table and is chosen because it is easier to identify or replenish than the rarest objects. Give one, verify the Social record, and then decide whether to repeat it.
The romance and marriage guide covers hearts, the Ring of Binding, wedding, and spouse room. The character directory covers homes and schedules so the gift can reach the intended person.
Use the Social menu as your gift record

Open the Social menu before selecting an item. Note the character's current hearts and any known gift reactions. After the gift, reopen the menu and confirm the item appears in the expected category.
Use this weekly sequence:
- Choose the character and relationship goal.
- Check how many gifts have already been given this week.
- Pick an inexpensive candidate not yet recorded.
- Give it and read the live reaction.
- Confirm the Social menu category.
- Use the second slot on a verified liked or loved item, or save it for a proposal.
Do not use a rare quest item for the first test. Some tables list bars, gems, keys, food needed for tasks, and unique monster drops. A loved reaction does not compensate for blocking a Forge upgrade or quest hand-in.
An older save may have received gifts before reaction tracking was introduced. An empty Social entry does not always mean the character has never seen the item. Treat the current menu as a forward-looking record rather than a perfect history.
Low-risk gift candidates for the nine marriage characters
| Character | Captured candidate to test | Why it is a reasonable first check | Avoid relying on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tanner | Apple | Listed among loved items and easier to recognize than rare monster drops | A task crop or one-off treasure without checking the menu |
| Sam | Duskmelon | Listed among loved items and tied to renewable farming | Pumpkin items, which the captured table lists as hated |
| Ellie | Mana Muffin | Listed among liked items, but reserve the Abigail task copy | Holy Water, listed as hated |
| Edwin | Celery | Listed among liked items and supported by a player report after other lists failed | Blood of the Gods, specifically reported as hated in a current save |
| Josh | Chocolate Cake | Listed among loved items and unambiguous in inventory | Light Salad or Vegetable Soup, listed as hated |
| Molly | Battery | Listed among liked items and does not consume the core ore/bar upgrade chain | Scrap Metal as a guaranteed favorite; player reports describe changed results |
| Alice | Ladybug | Listed among liked items and can be tested without sacrificing equipment | Bones and cursed bone items, listed as hated |
| Blorph | Brick | Listed among liked items and visually distinct | Ordinary cooked foods; many are listed as hated |
| Celeste | Candles | Listed among liked items and easier to identify than rare cursed gems | Bitter Herb, Salt, and Secret Sauce, listed as hated |
These are starting points from the captured tables, not promises. If the Social menu records a different response, trust the current game and stop repeating the item. The disagreement is valuable correction evidence.
The table also avoids presenting the rarest loved gift as “best.” A gift is practical when it is obtainable, does not block progression, and gives the reaction the current build displays. A common liked item can outperform a loved item that requires a boss drop or a week of processing.
Tanner gift strategy

Tanner's captured list favors many farm, forage, meal, and exploration items. Apple appears in the loved column, while several mushrooms, processed foods, and high-tier meals also appear. Begin with Apple if available and verify the result.
Avoid giving away materials needed to open the farm or advance another task. Tanner's practical role connects to the route toward Molly's Workshop, so complete critical conversations before using the visit only for gifts. If Apple is not available, test a renewable item from the current Social menu rather than spending a rare Shadewing Moth or boss material.
Sam gift strategy

Sam's captured loved list includes Duskmelon and several prepared foods, aged products, and late-game items. The same table places Pumpkin, Pumpkin Muffin, and Pumpkin Pie among hated gifts. That contrast is useful only after verification; preferences can change.
Start with a farm product that does not have an active task use. Keep Sam's gift route separate from the Cryptic Note puzzle and Seeker's Orb conversation. A correct present does not solve a password or advance an unrelated note objective.
Ellie gift strategy
Mana Muffin appears in Ellie's liked list and also has a task-specific purpose: Ellie trades artwork for one during Artwork for Abigail. If that task is active, reserve the first Mana Muffin for the exchange. A task hand-in is not necessarily counted as an ordinary weekly gift.
Ellie's captured loved list includes several rare monster, potion, and aged-cheese items. Do not use those as blind tests. The Mana Muffin guide explains the recipe, ingredients, and Abigail exchange so a friendship attempt does not consume the only required copy.
Edwin gift strategy
Edwin demonstrates why current reactions matter. Captured character data lists Celery among liked items and Blood of the Gods among hated items. A player report also says Edwin liked Celery but hated Blood of the Gods despite another guide recommending it.
Use Celery as a test if it is renewable in the current farm route. Preserve rare lore items for equipment, tasks, or later confirmation. The Edwin quest guide covers his schedule, Sacred Numbers evidence gap, and school adventure without treating gift preference as a quest requirement.
Josh gift strategy
Chocolate Cake appears among Josh's loved candidates. His captured list also favors several comfort foods and high-value meals, but contains hated categories such as Light Salad, Vegetable Soup, and Mystery Meat.
Use a clearly named finished food rather than a raw ingredient with a similar icon. If Chocolate Cake is expensive for the current farm, test a listed liked candidate such as Soda Pop and confirm the Social record before producing a large batch.
Molly gift strategy
Molly's table contains many ores, bars, gems, workshop supplies, and food. That thematic fit creates a resource conflict: the items most likely to interest her are often the items needed for forging. Battery appears in the captured liked list and is a better test than gifting the only Platinum Bar, Perfect Gem, or Elder Gem-related material.
Player reports warn that Scrap Metal and other traditional recommendations can produce changed reactions. Complete Molly's quests and protect upgrade materials first. Service access and friendship are separate systems.
Alice gift strategy
Ladybug appears among Alice's liked candidates; Sweet Cookie and several aged wines appear among loved candidates. Start with the renewable or lower-cost option. Her hated list contains bones, cursed bone items, raw Void materials, weeds, and several dark products.
Alice also participates in treasure-map interactions. Do not confuse a map conversation or lamp clue with a gift reaction. A weekly present will not automatically supply the map or solve its dig location.
Blorph gift strategy
Blorph's captured list differs sharply from the human residents. Brick, Bat Guano, Blerpfish, Brain, and several sewer or monster materials appear among liked items, while a long list of normal cooked foods appears under hated.
Brick is an identifiable first test when it is not needed for crafting. Check the Social result immediately because the list contains spelling and duplication issues, signs that the table itself needs ongoing maintenance. Blorph is normally found in the Sewers behind the Police Station, so combine the gift trip with a safe sewer objective rather than carrying rare items through unnecessary combat.
Celeste gift strategy
Candles and Paper appear in Celeste's captured liked list, along with many gems, ritual items, and unusual materials. Soft Cookie and several rare occult items appear among loved candidates. Candles are the better first test because a rare gem or quest artifact may be harder to replace.
Celeste is associated with the Library and Molly's school group. A correct gift can raise friendship but does not guarantee the school letter at one exact heart threshold; version records conflict. Keep invitation checks separate from gift-reaction checks.
Universal gifts and their limits
Captured data lists a universal category. Love Potion appears as universally loved, while a large set of foods and materials appears liked or neutral. The same source marks Failed Meal, festival Eggs, many jellies, and many pickles as disliked.
“Universal” should still be tested in the current build. It describes the captured relationship table, not an irreversible engine guarantee. Love Potion is particularly valuable; giving one to prove a table entry may be wasteful when a common character-specific item can establish the same weekly progress.
Use universal gifts when:
- the character-specific table has no verified current entry;
- the item is renewable and not needed for a task;
- the Social menu confirms the response on the first recipient;
- the weekly slot is not reserved for a Ring of Binding.
Do not assume a universal category overrides a character-specific exception. When the live reaction differs, the live reaction wins.
Plan gifts around marriage
Marriage candidates are Alice, Josh, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Tanner, Molly, Blorph, and Celeste. The proposal route requires ten full hearts and a Ring of Binding crafted at a Jeweler's Desk. Give the ring through the gift option.
During the proposal week, use the first gift only if necessary and leave the second slot free. Better still, reserve both until the ring and target are ready. A high heart display without an available gift action can postpone the proposal.
School adventures are separate from marriage. You can propose without completing the candidate's school story. Conversely, finishing a school adventure does not remove the ten-heart and ring requirements.
Fix a gift that gives the wrong reaction
| Symptom | Check | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction differs from this guide | Social menu and current build | Trust the current game and stop repeating the item |
| Gift option is unavailable | Two-gift weekly limit or event dialogue | Wait for the reset or clear the event state |
| Ring of Binding cannot be given | Ten hearts, gift slot, correct item | Follow the proposal checklist |
| Item vanished without Social record | Task hand-in versus gift interaction | Check the active task and inventory |
| Character cannot be found | Home, alternate locations, time, weather | Use the character directory route |
| Old gifts are not recorded | Save predates tracking | Begin a new verified list from current reactions |
| “Universal” item is disliked | Version or character exception | Record the result and use a confirmed character item |
Do not reload repeatedly to force a preferred reaction unless testing whether the result is random. Gift preference should be treated as a stable category within a build, but the evidence does not support claiming that every reaction is immutable across releases.
Keep a compact weekly gift ledger
Record character, week, first item, reaction, second item, reaction, and remaining proposal slot. This can be a note outside the game or a screenshot of the Social menu. It prevents duplicated failed tests and preserves rare resources.
When reporting a correction, include the exact item name, quality or processed form, recipient, reaction text, Social category, game build, and date. “Molly hates ore now” is too broad if the item was Iron Ore, Scrap Metal, or a processed bar.
The best gift is therefore the one confirmed by the current Social menu, available without blocking progression, and timed within the weekly allowance. Use the character candidates above to start, but let the save—not an old table—decide what to repeat.
