Leeches are fishing bait in Welcome to Elderfield, used at the Lakefront and associated with Fog Eel. Bait Packs from the General Store can replenish your supply, but their contents are random. Load a Leech onto your rod through the bait's Use option; carrying it in your inventory does not equip it.

Use Leeches for the Fog Eel objective

Herb's early fishing lesson first asks for a Ghost Flounder, then moves to Fog Eel. For that second challenge, he recommends Leeches and says the fish can be caught at the same Lakefront area. He also tells you to provide this bait yourself: he has no Leeches to give you for the challenge.

Keep the Old Fishing Rod and load Leeches before casting. The change affects the relevant lake catch chances, but it does not make every completed attempt produce Fog Eel. Other catches remain possible while you are working toward the task.

For the first lesson, use the Ghost Flounder guide and Worm bait. For the actual minigame, the fishing tutorial explains the blue target and the separate progress bar. Choosing the bait and successfully landing a bite solve different parts of the objective.

Buy Bait Packs from the General Store

Check the General Store for the early Bait Pack. It is a box of random fishing bait, with Worms, Leeches, and Bugs among the early possible contents. Opening a pack is therefore a supply option rather than a guaranteed Leech purchase.

Read the result of each opening before loading the rod. A Worm result can support the Ghost Flounder task, while Bugs matter at Mall fishing water. Keep those items when they fit your other objectives instead of assuming the pack has failed because it did not contain the exact bait you wanted.

Current pack price, item quantities, and outcome probabilities are not confirmed here. A Leech's old sell value is not the cost of buying one, and a pack's price cannot be divided into a guaranteed number of Leeches. Budget around the shop's actual display and the fact that the result is random.

If you only need general Lakefront fishing practice, you may already have usable Worms. If you specifically need Fog Eel, inspect your Leech supply before setting off. This helps avoid spending your remaining money on packs without first checking the bait stored at home.

Earlier Tier 1 pack results

The early Tier 1 Bait Pack uses a rolled result to choose the bait type. Its recorded outcome bands are Worms on 1–3, Leeches on 4–5, and Bugs on 6. These are older result categories, not confirmed current pack probabilities or quantities.

A result band does not state how many bait items you receive, and it does not prove that every number has an equal chance. Use the pack's actual result to update your supplies instead of calculating a guaranteed Leech cost from this reference.

The older Leech item entry has a six-gold sell value, while the Tier 1 pack has its own sell-value entry. Neither field is a verified current purchase price. For a buying decision, the shop's displayed cost and the random contents are the relevant information.

Keep Leeches found while exploring

Leeches can turn up while searching containers and exploring, including the Mall area. The older item list also associates them with Mall Mine foraging and a gift from Sam at the Lakefront. Those are additional acquisition leads, not confirmed fixed daily handouts.

Search ordinary loot opportunities when you are already following a route, and keep any Leeches you receive for later fishing. There is no confirmed container coordinate that guarantees a stack every visit. A one-time find should not become the sole plan for completing a task that may take several casts.

Similarly, meeting Sam at the lake is not proof that every conversation will award Leeches. A gift can depend on the interaction or progression. If no bait is offered, use another available supply route rather than repeatedly reopening the same dialogue on the assumption that a daily payout is missing.

The General Store pack is the clearest replenishment option when incidental finds run out. Farming Wormsprout for Worm bait can support other lake objectives, but Wormsprout does not grow Leeches. Keep those two bait supplies distinct when planning your crop beds.

Equip the bait and check the water

Select Use on the Leech item, then inspect the rod's loaded bait. At the Lakefront, Worms or Leeches satisfy the area's basic bait requirement. If the game reports the wrong bait while you are carrying Leeches, the rod may still have a different type loaded from an earlier trip.

The Mall F1 Hallway accepts Bugs, and early sewer water uses Maggots. Leeches are not a universal replacement for either. Match the message at the fishing spot to the bait on the rod rather than simply choosing the rarest item in your bag.

Earlier play showed previously equipped bait returning when a new type was loaded. That swap behavior has not been confirmed for the release build. Check your own counts before and after changing bait if you are managing a limited supply.

Understand what Leech bait changes

Leeches influence the Lakefront's Ghost Flounder and Fog Eel outcomes. They do not exclude every other fish from the water. Some of the expanded lake selection is governed by season or time, and the bait change does not remove those separate conditions.

This is why a correct Leech setup can still produce other catches. The result does not mean that you failed to equip the bait, provided the rod actually shows it loaded. Inspect that clear state first before changing your entire route.

There is no confirmed drop-rate table or guaranteed number of casts for Fog Eel here. A player who catches one quickly and a player who needs several attempts can both be using the intended method. Plan with spare bait when possible, but do not interpret a particular stack size as a promise of success.

Rain can shorten the wait for bites in the introductory fishing rules. It does not provide a guaranteed Fog Eel or make all catches the same quality. Use weather as part of planning the session, while keeping the bait and named-fish requirements central.

Account for the September demo bait fix

A September 2026 demo issue affected some bait-specific fish. The subsequent September 8 update corrected the specialized bait bonus, with Leeches explicitly included in the discussion of the problem. Older experiences of repeatedly using the intended bait can therefore reflect a version issue as well as ordinary randomness.

If your results seem inconsistent with the expected bait behavior, check which build you are playing. A fixed demo behavior should not be assumed to apply to every older installation. Equally, the existence of that old issue is not proof that any current unlucky run is a bug.

The practical checks are still location, loaded bait, the task's species, and any current conditions shown by the game. If those are correct, avoid changing to an incompatible bait merely because several catches were not the target. Keep the distinction between an unavailable cast, a failed minigame, and an unwanted successful catch.

Finish Herb's lesson and collect the reward

Once you catch Fog Eel for Herb, visit him before selling or cooking the fish. The lesson teaches Baked Fish Fillet and Fog Broth, then awards a Bait Pack. This pack is a reward for the completed teaching chain; it does not remove the need to supply your own Leeches for the catch that finishes it.

Open the reward pack when you want to add its contents to your fishing supply. As with a purchased pack, do not count it as a guaranteed stack of Leeches before opening it. If it gives Worms or Bugs, those can still support the corresponding lake or Mall fishing objectives.

The recipe reward is the main connection to your next use for Fog Eel. Learning the recipes does not automatically cook the fish, and owning the ingredients before the lesson does not mean the recipes were already available. Return to the Cooking Pot after the dialogue and inspect the newly learned choices.

Choose between the two early Fog Eel dishes

The two recorded Cooking Pot recipes use one Fog Eel each, but their other ingredients differ. Baked Fish Fillet adds Salt and Red Mushrooms. Fog Broth adds Celery, which gives a small crop harvest a direct use alongside the fish caught with your Leeches.

These are earlier recipe quantities; compare them with your current Cooking Pot menu before making a batch. If you have one Fog Eel and an active request for Fog Broth, using the fish in Baked Fish Fillet leaves that request unfinished. Decide which finished dish you need while the ingredient is still available.

If you want one of each dish, the recorded recipes need two Fog Eels in total, plus a Salt, two Red Mushrooms, and a Celery. That is a cooking requirement rather than a forecast of two Leech casts. A completed fishing attempt can produce another species, so count the actual Fog Eels after returning from the lake.

Bring Fog Broth to Dave

Dave's task is called A Snack for a Cat, and he is in the Town South house. He asks for the prepared Fog Broth. The route is to catch a Fog Eel at the Lakefront, grow Celery, learn the recipe through Herb's tasks, cook it, and bring the finished broth to Dave.

This task rewards a Preserving Barrel. The barrel expands what you can do with other farm ingredients, including the Eyeball preservation route. That makes a successful Leech fishing session useful even if your longer-term goal is a processed crop item rather than another fish.

Check the state of both tasks before making a second fishing trip. If Herb's Fog Eel stage is unfinished, show him the catch to obtain the cooking recipe. If the lesson is complete and Fog Broth is already in your inventory, visit Dave with the dish instead of spending more bait on a fish you no longer need for that delivery.

Keep the fish names and dish names distinct in the journal. Ghost Flounder, Ghost Broth, Fog Eel, and Fog Broth are not the same items. Dave's request follows the Fog Eel recipe, so a bowl of Ghost Broth will not satisfy the recorded delivery simply because both dishes came from Herb's lessons.

If you have the recipe and Fog Eel but no Celery, the remaining step is farming. If you have Celery but no Fog Eel, check your Leech supply and loaded bait before returning to the Lakefront. Looking at the missing ingredient makes the next trip specific rather than repeating the entire teaching chain.

Keep bait out of the cooking plan

Leeches are bait, even though their appearance may make them look like another unusual ingredient. When you cannot find usable bait, check your ordinary inventory and the bait loaded on the rod.

If you need food, use the fish and recipes produced by the fishing progression. If you need bait, preserve the Leeches for compatible casts. Separating those uses makes it easier to locate the missing item when you return to the lake with a bag full of ingredients but nothing equipped.

The most useful Leech routine is simple: collect incidental bait, check Bait Packs when you need more, load Leeches for Fog Eel, and keep the catch for the active task. None of those steps depends on a promised pack roll or a guaranteed first cast. Work from the bait and fish you actually have.
