Use the telephone in the Fancy Closet at the Fancy House to call the number shown by your television news in Welcome to Elderfield. The access route involves Josh's dialogue about a key dropped in the Sewers, finding the Fancy Key, and opening the closet. The broadcast number changes; 1543380 is one recorded example, not a universal number for every call.

Find the Fancy House

The Fancy House is in the home residential area, toward the bottom right and to the right of the cat's house. It is associated with Pumpkid's parents. Inspecting the furniture produces descriptions that call the objects fancy, which is a useful way to confirm that you entered the intended house.

This is a different location from Dave's password room. Dave is the cat in the neighboring house, while the telephone route points to the Fancy House and its locked closet. If the door in front of you asks for five digits, you have found the Cryptic Note from Sam password puzzle instead.

Look for the ordinary closet once you have identified the house. In an older Demo playthrough, the Fancy Key opened the mundane closet rather than the conspicuous door with blood beneath it. If your room matches that layout, this distinction can help you choose the correct interaction. The working telephone for this route is behind the closet access step. Buying a decorative telephone from a shop is not an established substitute for unlocking this particular interaction.

Follow Josh's key dialogue

Start looking for Josh at the right unit of his duplex in Town West, beside Edwin’s house. When you meet him, look for the conversation about someone dropping a key into the Sewers. That is the recorded lead into obtaining the Fancy Key. Follow the dialogue you actually receive before searching for the relevant dropped item.

Also check for Josh in front of the Fancy House while you are in the residential area. The key conversation has been recorded there, so searching only inside his home can miss the relevant meeting. Use his presence at the house as an opportunity to talk, without treating a particular weekday or hour as a guaranteed trigger.

If Josh is only talking about another subject, revisit him as you continue playing. His exact key-dialogue trigger has not been established, and there is no confirmed required task count.

Character schedules can vary, with time of day and weather affecting whether someone follows a regular, home, or Saloon schedule. That makes a single successful meeting time a poor basis for an exact weekly appointment. A reported meeting at noon on Friday the 12th should not be treated as a fixed appointment.

Retrieve the Fancy Key from the Sewers

The recorded route sends you into the Sewers for the dropped Fancy Key. Search for that named item after obtaining the dialogue lead. The exact current pickup tile is unresolved.

Very early directions can point too far into the Sewers: v0.1.6 moved the Fancy Closet key to an earlier location in November 2024. Search the accessible earlier sections before assuming that you must unlock every sewer gate. That change does not identify a specific modern pickup tile, but it makes an old deep-sewer route an unreliable reason to postpone looking.

Carry recovery supplies suitable for the sewer trip, and leave room for useful items. The purpose of this visit is the Fancy Key, not an ordinary Skeleton Key or one of the Gatekeeper's Gate Keys. Finding another key-shaped item does not necessarily complete the telephone prerequisite.

Once you have the Fancy Key, return to the Fancy House and interact with the closet's lock. Read the item name in the prompt before using it. The Skeleton Key uses guide explains why a Basic Skeleton Key should not be assumed to open every named lock in town.

If a sewer gate prevents access to an area you are trying to search, check the Gatekeeper's key progression. That is a separate route-opening task. The Gatekeeper does not provide the telephone number, and the Fancy Key does not replace his requested keys.

Read the television's current number

Welcome to Elderfield television displaying the News Anchor broadcast

Watch the television news for the strange-phone-calls report. The broadcast describes a changing number that connects to an unusual voice, with different numbers potentially producing different messages. Write down the number displayed by that specific report before walking to the telephone.

One recorded broadcast gives 1543380, also written with a hyphen as 154-3380. Other recorded branches use different numbers. Copying that first example without checking your current report can send you toward instructions that do not match the event you intended to follow.

The broadcast's own wording is the key distinction: the number changes over time, while the person on the other end remains the same. This is not an ordinary directory where every call uses one permanent answer. Read the report again if you are unsure of the digits rather than completing the number from memory.

The telephone event is also different from a buried-treasure report. A treasure broadcast gives a location clue, such as the smelly place where time is told, and calls for a digging route. A telephone broadcast gives a number and uses the call to supply the next instruction.

Dial and follow the resulting instruction

Enter the Fancy Closet and interact with the working phone. Use the number from the report, then read the entire message before leaving for the next location. The call's instruction determines what you need to inspect afterward.

Use the game's input and confirmation prompts, then retain the instruction received from that call.

If the message points to a specific object, interact with that object rather than simply visiting the named building. A large crate, a television beside a cashier, the back of an old house, and an old washing machine are different targets. Arriving in the general area is only the route step, not the final inspection.

Recorded call branches

The following are recorded branches associated with the phone event. They help identify a message you receive, but the active broadcast and actual phone instructions should take priority. They are not a complete guarantee of every current number, reward, or encounter.

NumberRecorded directionRelevant consequence
893-0006Inspect the large crate on the first floor of the local Mall MinesThe crate is the stated target
348-7652Inspect the television beside the cashier in Ultra Video at the MallThe television, not any random Mall screen
154-3380Stand behind the strange old house in the SewersAn attack is associated with this branch
284-7893Inspect an old washing machineA Special Cat attack is associated with this branch

Two branches explicitly involve attacks. Prepare for the instruction you receive, and check the actual result instead of expecting a fixed reward package.

For the Mall branches, inspect the named object: the large crate is inside Mall Mines F1, and the television is beside Ultra Video’s cashier. The sewer-house and washing-machine branches can lead to attacks, so prepare before pursuing them. The complete route to the old washing machine and the branches’ fixed reward contents remain unresolved.

Resolve a missing phone option

First confirm the building: the Fancy House is beside the cat's house, and its furniture descriptions provide a recognizable clue. Next confirm the key: the route calls for Fancy Key and Fancy Closet. A five-digit password door or a generic skeleton-key prompt means you are dealing with a different lock.

If Josh has not offered the sewer-key lead, there is no established shortcut based on a particular weekday or completed-task total. Continue the conversation route as you encounter him and inspect the relevant journal or inventory state. Repeatedly buying shop telephones does not solve a missing closet key.

If you can use the phone but the message differs from the table, follow the message received. A number shown in another playthrough does not override your current broadcast. Keep the seven-digit call number separate from Dave's five-digit house code.

Check the object named by the call

If an object does not respond, check the exact building, sub-area, and object in the message before changing dates. The Fancy Key trigger and pickup location are not fully established, and there is no confirmed call expiry or repeat limit. Follow your active instruction without assuming that sleeping, bathing, or dying will reset this event.
