Match the riddle before answering

The Corpse Tree is a speaking corpse in the Old Woods clearing south of the bus stop. Its three questions use different rules. For the three friends with a secret, a knife, and an immortal, answer 0 to take the Bones branch and claim the additional early rewards when still available. For the detective, gravedigger, and teacher, choose 2 to receive blessings rather than curses. For the fool asked to rate their survival from one to nine, 9 produces no reward or penalty.

These answers are not interchangeable. In particular, answering 0 to the fool's survival question causes 9,999 HP damage. Identify the spoken question before applying any answer from a guide.

The encounter also has a hidden selection step. An initial die result determines which riddle runs. Your typed answer resolves the selected riddle; it does not choose a different branch. A favorable answer therefore cannot guarantee that the next visit offers the ring question.

Find the clearing south of the bus stop

Welcome to Elderfield corpse impaled by branches against a tree trunk
Identify the speaking corpse before applying the riddle answers.

Look in the Old Woods clearing south of the bus stop. Availability depends on which clearings are open that day. Finding the right general region does not establish that this particular clearing is accessible on every visit.

For the route into the region and its other objectives, use the Old Woods guide. The usual entrance is on the northern side of Town, past Tanner's house. The Campsite bus stop costs 3,000 gold to activate; that travel option is useful for repeated Woods trips, but activation is not listed as the riddle's answer condition.

The object to identify is the corpse impaled by a tree. This speaking character is separate from the corpses searched after ordinary battles. If your issue is a post-combat loot message, the corpse search explanation covers the known reward checks and the remaining message-specific gap.

Read the initial die branch

Initial resultQuestion selectedMain decision
−1 or lowerNo riddle branchThis outcome is possible only at Very Unlucky
0–2The fool's chance of leaving the forest aliveChoose a survival rating
3–4Which of the detective, gravedigger, and teacher returnsChoose corpse 1, 2, or 3
5 or higherHow many of the three friends returnChoose a number; 0 has the better early reward branch

A result below one is possible because the working die result can be modified. The animation's visible faces do not restrict every underlying result to one through six. The Luck guide explains these die modifiers and the current tier-calculation limitation. Its configured probabilities should not be treated as a guarantee that a particular live build applies the expected tier.

The initial result and your answer have separate jobs. Increasing the chance of a high initial result can affect which riddle appears. It does not remove penalties from another riddle if that one is selected instead.

Answer the fool's survival question

This question describes a fool entering an ancient forest, finding a corpse impaled by a tree, and deciding to speak with it. The corpse asks how likely the fool is to leave alive, on a scale of one to nine. It belongs to initial results 0–2.

Your answerResult
0Take 9,999 HP damage
1–4Receive four random curses, then fight Wild Deer; victory gives 50 EXP
5–8Fight Wild Deer; victory gives 50 EXP
9No reward or penalty

Choose 9 if your objective is to avoid this branch's listed fight and curses. It does not award the Emerald Bone Ring, cleansing supplies, or a consolation item. That is a neutral exit from this question.

Answers 5–8 select the deer fight without the four-curses addition. Answers 1–4 add those curses before the battle. The 50 EXP belongs to victory over the Wild Deer, not simply to selecting the answer. Do not count it as an immediate reward if the battle has not been won.

Answer 0 is especially dangerous here because another Corpse Tree question also accepts 0. The same number that is useful in the friends riddle has a severe damage result in this one.

Choose the gravedigger in the resurrection question

For initial results 3–4, the corpse describes three bodies: the first was a detective, the second a gravedigger, and the third a teacher. It asks which will be resurrected.

Choose 2, the gravedigger, for three random blessings. Choices 1 and 3 give three random curses instead. This is the favorable answer within that branch, but it still has a permanent cost the first time the branch occurs.

AnswerImmediate effectsFirst occurrence in this roll range
1 or 3Three random cursesMax Agility permanently decreases by 1
2Three random blessingsMax Agility permanently decreases by 1

The permanent Agility reduction applies to the first result in this initial-roll range even when you choose 2. Selecting the correct corpse does not bypass it. The distinction matters because a blessing is an active effect, while the Agility change alters the permanent stat.

There is no reliable basis for promising that bathing away a curse reverses this permanent reduction. The branch explicitly describes different kinds of changes: random effects from the answer and a permanent change attached to the first occurrence.

Answer zero for the three friends

For an initial result of 5 or higher, the question involves three friends entering the woods. One has a secret, one has a knife, and one is immortal. Dialogue may ask how many return or how many survive. This is the question where 0 selects the favorable early-reward branch.

Answering 0 always gives three Bones. On the first three results of 5 or higher at this corpse, it also gives two Cleansing Balm, plus Emerald Bone Ring +5 if the ring has not already been claimed.

An answer other than 0 gives one Cleansing Balm during that same early allocation. After those early results have been used, it gives three Bones instead. The limited counter belongs to the selected riddle branch, rather than to a particular typed answer.

AnswerDuring the first three 5+ resultsAfter the early allocation
0Three Bones, two Cleansing Balm, and the ring if unclaimedThree Bones
Any other numberOne Cleansing BalmThree Bones

The ring is conditional: it is not a fresh ring on every successful visit. The three early rewards are shared between both answer choices. Choosing a different number can consume an early result without taking the stronger 0-answer reward. It does not reserve a separate set of three attempts for later.

Distinguish exhausted rewards from a wrong answer

If the friends question now gives only Bones, check the early allocation before assuming that 0 stopped working. Three Bones are the repeat reward after the early 5+ results have been used. A correct answer and an exhausted reward allocation can occur together.

Likewise, failing to receive another Emerald Bone Ring does not establish a changed riddle solution. The additional ring is available only if it has not already been claimed. The answer controls the branch, while availability controls whether the extra item is still awarded.

Use the spoken question, the initial result when visible, and whether the early rewards have already been spent to interpret the outcome. Those details explain the documented differences without assuming that every return visit repeats the first reward package.
